Best Leisure Traveller DVT Prevention Specialist – UK 2021
It is with great excitement that we can today announce that RBR active™ and the RBR legflow™ have been awarded the Best Leisure Traveller DVT Prevention Specialist in the LuxLife Travel and Tourism Awards 2021.
This award goes a long way in confirming the fact that the RBR legflow™ Deep Vein Thrombosis prevention device (approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) has proved to be the leisure travellers most positive addition to their travel welfare companions.
Paul Westerman, RBR active™ Director said; “To be recognised by LuxLife Travel and Tourism Awards 2021 for our innovative DVT prevention device is a wonderful accomplishment. With the travel industry taking such a hit, because of COVID-19, we feel that the award is extra special in that we know that we were up against some other very strong competition, especially from the more widely used devices (like flight socks, and other non-trialled devices which are available at many airports around the world). So, for us (a new comer to the travel and air industries) to be awarded the award for Best Leisure Traveller DVT Prevention Specialist is a superb testament for all the research, trials and hard work we’ve all undertaken since 2017.”
Holly Morris awards executive Luxlife Magazine said about the award; “ To see such a simple, innovative medical device, with the quality research and trials underpinning the actual proven ability of the RBR legflow™ made this award an easy decision to make. For too long leisure travellers have solely relied upon the flight sock as their go-to means of preventing DVT’s due to flights. However, we now know that research has shown that this previously widely used solution may bear no actual medical or preventative benefit at all. So, for RBR active™ to bring their DVT prevention device to the travel and air industries at this time is a truly invaluable decision by the company and it is something that will benefit the leisure and business traveller well to engage with.”
So, what does the future hold for the RBR legflow™? Paul says; “ideally we want to see all leisure and business travellers use the RBR legflow™ as their way to prevent the threat of ever developing a deadly blood clot due to being sedentary during the flight. We’re also keen to raise awareness of the very important fact that you don’t “get” a DVT because of flying. This perception is totally incorrect. Our research has proven that passengers can develop a DVT during a flight not because of air pressure, air craft design, air circulation. It is quite simply because passengers are sedentary. Just a mere 90 minutes being sedentary and blood flow to the lower limbs has decreased by over 50%, it is this, that causes the potential development of Deep Vein Thrombosis. The sooner airlines, passengers and the travel industry communicate this fact, the safer all air travel will be.”
Key facts:
- During sustained periods of immobility, like flying, the combined effects of venous pooling, reduced flow create the conditions necessary for thrombus activation
- The cost of thrombosis to the NHS is estimated at over £200 million a year.
- Globally this is a cost to health service providers of more than £22 billion each year
- More than 60% of all cases of VTE are associated with hospitalisation, with many events occurring up to 90 days after admission
- VTE affects approximately one in 1000 of the UK population and is a significant cause of mortality, long-term disability and chronic ill-health problems
- In Europe, there are 544,000 VTE-related deaths every year
- In the U.S. and Europe, VTE-related events kill more people than AIDS, breast cancer, prostate cancer and motor vehicle crashes combined
- In the UK, up to 60% of VTE cases occur during or after hospitalisation, making it the leading preventable cause of hospital death
- Hospital-acquired blood clots cause an estimated 25,000 preventable deaths each year
